NSWA

  • Formed in 1998, 7 dive operators
  • Now includes 20 operators, with strong links to BTNB and environmental NGO’s (Community Forum, WWF)
  • Dive operators work together and have very strong relationship with each other

NSWA Activities – “3 E’s” Education, Employment, Enforcement

Education program

  • Scholarship donation program for local villagers, so far has sponsored 160 children from around the park
  • Mooring buoys placement around the park and beyond
  • Sponsored Earth Day 2001-2006 Reef Cleanups for Bunaken Villagers
  • Donated coral reef identification books/photos to community information centers

Employment program

  • Committed to hire more villagers directly in operations (boatmen, dive guides, cooks, receptionists)
  • Village handicrafts program
  • Purchase of pelagic fish products from villagers (mahi-mahi, etc). NOTE – no reef fish in restaurants!
  • Helped develop entrance fee system that now employs 94 local villagers in patrol system and fee collection
  • Help with relieved of Aceh Tsunami and mud slide and flood in North Sulawesi

Enforcement program

  • Strict ban on anchoring
  • Innovative Patrol Agreement with BTNB/Police with villagers involvement
  • Innovative Patrol Agreement with BTNB/Police, using Bunaken Preservation Fund ($5/diver) to fund patrols (with NRM matching grant). Highly successful in curbing DFP and socializing new zonation system!
  • Villager involvement
  • “Hand-off” to BNPMAB
  • Assist with releasing more than 600 Humphead Napoleon Wrasses back to nature

Sustainable Tourism

  • Support a sophisticated Diver Carrying Capacity Study done by DR. Emre Turak and DR. Lyndon D. Vantier
  • Dive Destination Campaign trough “DiveNorthSulawesi.com”
  • Website, attend trade shows, brochures, posters, adds in magazines
  • COTS data base
  • Each dive center has “adopt” a dive site to do clean up
  • Crown Of Thorn Starfish clean up, from 1 Nov 2003- 21 June 2006 has cleaned 49,414 COTS
  • Help with coral and fish monitoring program
  • Help selling the entrance tags and find sponsors for tag printing
